Psytrance Music 2006 - 2007

Psytrance reached an all-time-high in 2006 with more releases and parties than ever before. The music genres success was evident in DJ Mag's Top 100 DJs in the world chart.
Infected Mushroom reached once more the highest position psychedelic trance ever witnessed since its humble beginnings at No12.
DJ Yahel followed at No28 with Astral Projection's Offer Nisim at No29!
Not very far Skazi appeared at No37 with Astrix on his tail at No41. And there is more:
Wrecked Machines entered in position 55 with legendary Simon 'Hallucinogen' Posford at 68.

It doesn't look long until the first psytrance DJ enters the top 10 and with such big wins for the music we love in 2006, what is going to happen in 2007?

Since when was this a good thing?

Should you not be focusing on a discussion of whether these artists are actually making anything *good* ?

No surprise that the DJ Mag Top 100 has been picking up more psytrance; it's one of the only dance music genres that's growing in popularity.

It's a complete fantasy to think that it means anything more than this.

Up your game mate.

Why do we look to this ever-growing appeal for psytrance as something good for psytrance music ? Just like any other genre that reaches the tops, it will be destroyed by an ever more bigger desire to sell, productions become cheesy, other genres influence it etc.

My point of view is that this is a shame for psytrance, a genre that is carrying the original trance with it. It's the only trance genre with some integrity left(that and goa). Too bad we can't stop it from becoming popular and commercialized.

Sincerely.

Commercialisation of psy-trance a bad thing? Don't make me laugh! Surely more people getting into the psy scene is a GOOD thing! Means the artists sell more units, parties make profit rather than lose money, and the psy-trance scene expands to become a bigger pool of like minded ppl. Psy-trance is a commercial activity anyway, artists need to earn money - to think we live in some hippy utopia outside the framework of capitalism is deranged fantasy. And if you don't like some of the music, don't buy it! Though I'm not a big fan of Infected Mushroom, Astrix has made some decent music in his time...

You can be commercially successful and yet have underground integrity too - John 00 Fleming is old school Goa Trance and Psy Trance - he's been part of the dance scene since the late 80s, one of its pioneers, and has been playing underground goa/psy trance since the early 90s, but he's got loads of gold discs and sold shed loads of records. Why? Coz people like him and the music he plays as a DJ, makes as a producer and releases as a label owner.

He still plays underground music for an underground genre; he's just successful, which makes him a good moutpiece for Psy Trance I think.

See a recent interview with him here: http://www.ilikemusic.com/interviews/John_00_Fleming_interview_2008-4540
